4.4 quake 19 Jan 12:03 am (GMT -3)
A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Caucete, Departamento de Caucete, San Juan, Argentina, was reported only 15 minutes ago by INPRES, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 274 km beneath the epicenter after midnight on Tuesday 19 January 2021 at 12:03 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Caucete (pop. 33,600, 70 km away), Santa Lucia (pop. 43,600, 91 km away), San Juan (pop. 447,000, 95 km away), Chimbas (pop. 73,800, 96 km away), Villa Paula de Sarmiento (pop. 19,100, 96 km away), Albardon (pop. 20,400, 96 km away), and Pocito (pop. 41,000, 99 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
