A intermediate to deep magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported after midnight near Comitan, Comitán Municipality, Chiapas, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Wednesday 20 January 2021 at 12:25 am local time at an intermediate to considerable depth of 219 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Antigua Maravillas (pop. 130, 1 km away), Ignacio Zaragoza (pop. 1,100, 17 km away), Jaltenango de la Paz (pop. 10,400, 29 km away), Comalapa (pop. 18,700, 45 km away), Venustiano Carranza (pop. 15,500, 47 km away), Las Rosas (pop. 18,800, 49 km away), Comitan (pop. 97,500, 49 km away), and Motozintla (pop. 23,800, 67 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
