Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Manaca Civil, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama. The tremor was recorded early morning on Wednesday 20 January 2021 at 2:17 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Manaca Civil (pop. 1,200) located 2 km from the epicenter, Manaca Norte (pop. 1,300) 2 km away, El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 4 km away, Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) 7 km away, Finca Blanco (pop. 1,100) 7 km away, La Esperanza (pop. 1,900) 9 km away, and Progreso (pop. 2,200) 13 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Concepcion (pop. 17,700) located 31 km from the epicenter, and David (pop. 82,000) 45 km away.
