An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 19 minutes ago 56 km northeast of Matias Romero, Mexico, Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 134 km beneath the epicenter near Matias Romero, Matías Romero Avendaño, Oaxaca, Mexico, early morning on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 6:07 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Dos Arroyos (La Paz) (pop. 170) located 10 km from the epicenter, and Hermanos Cedillo (pop. 1,200) 17 km away. In Poblado Cinco (pop. 1,300, 20 km away), Poblado 10 (pop. 3,300, 23 km away), Santa Maria Chimalapa (pop. 2,500, 25 km away), Cuauhtémoc (pop. 2,300, 34 km away), Matias Romero (pop. 18,900, 56 km away), and Ixtepec (pop. 25,400, 83 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
