An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 7 minutes ago 36 km west of Puerto Armuelles, Panama, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 11 km beneath the epicenter near Puerto Armuelles, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama, in the morning on Thursday 21 January 2021 at 11:08 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in San Bartolo Limite (pop. 58) located 26 km from the epicenter, Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) 36 km away, El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 38 km away, Finca Blanco (pop. 1,100) 39 km away, Manaca Civil (pop. 1,200) 43 km away, Manaca Norte (pop. 1,300) 43 km away, Progreso (pop. 2,200) 46 km away, and La Esperanza (pop. 1,900) 48 km away.
