An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 12 minutes ago 73 km southwest of Santa Tecla, El Salvador, the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 25 km beneath the epicenter near Santa Tecla, Departamento de La Libertad, El Salvador, in the morning on Friday 22 January 2021 at 10:00 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
