A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Ōfunato, Ōfunato-shi, Iwate, Japan, was reported only 11 minutes ago by NIED, considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 47.3 km beneath the epicenter in the evening on Saturday 23 January 2021 at 8:19 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1.
