An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred only 6 minutes ago 22 km northeast of Rotorua, New Zealand, New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 7.7 km beneath the epicenter near Rotorua, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, in the morning on Monday 25 January 2021 at 7:57 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kawerau (pop. 6,700) located 19 km from the epicenter, Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 22 km away, and Rotorua (pop. 65,900) 22 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Edgecumbe (pop. 1,600) located 32 km from the epicenter, Maketu (pop. 1,100) 35 km away, Whakatane (pop. 18,600) 46 km away, Tauranga (pop. 110,300) 52 km away, and Taupo (pop. 22,500) 76 km away.

4.1 km NE of epicenter [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) : I was sitting on the bed and felt it shaking. The flu pipe on our chimney also rattled but no damage to the house or property  
rotoiti, 1670a state high way 30 (1.6 km NW of epicenter) [Map] / Moderate shaking (MMI V) / complex motion difficult to describe / 10-15 s : was in bathroom cleaning after prior earthquake described as foreshock on stuff.co.nz, then suddeny strong shaking started, makinh another mess, knocking jars off shelves and even fabric conditioner, minor trouble standing but did not feel like id fall over any time soon
