5.3 quake 25 Jan 5:53 pm (GMT +10)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 13 minutes ago 30 km south of Kokopo, Papua New Guinea, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 112 km beneath the epicenter near Kokopo, Kokopo District, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea, in the afternoon on Monday 25 January 2021 at 5:53 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.1.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kokopo (pop. 26,300) located 30 km from the epicenter, and Rabaul (pop. 8,100) 46 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
