Just 9 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Al Ḩasakah, Al-Hasakah, Syria. The tremor was recorded around noon on Tuesday 26 January 2021 at 1:17 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Al Ḩasakah (pop. 81,500) located 58 km from the epicenter, Sinjār (pop. 38,300) 70 km away, Nisibis (pop. 89,000) 109 km away, Ad Darbāsīyah (pop. 21,500) 118 km away, and Dayr az Zawr (pop. 242,600) 124 km away.
