An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 10 minutes ago 13 km west of Granada, Spain, IGN reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Granada, Andalusia, Spain, early evening on Thursday 28 January 2021 at 7:49 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Chauchina (pop. 4,400) located 3 km from the epicenter, and Santafé (pop. 15,400) 4 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Granada (pop. 234,300) located 13 km from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Jaén (pop. 116,600) located 66 km from the epicenter, and Malaga (pop. 568,300) 78 km away.
