Just 7 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near David, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama. The tremor was recorded early morning on Friday 29 January 2021 at 6:23 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Guanabano (pop. 140) located 3 km from the epicenter.
In Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) located 9 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in La Concepcion (pop. 17,700) located 46 km from the epicenter, Boqueron (pop. 1,700) 49 km away, Pedregal (pop. 17,400) 54 km away, David (pop. 82,000) 57 km away, Rio Sereno (pop. 1,400) 68 km away, Bajo Boquete (pop. 2,300) 81 km away, and Horconcitos (pop. 880) 83 km away.
