Significant magnitude 5.4 earthquake 68 km southwest of David, Panama

5.4 quake 29 Jan 7:14 am (GMT -6)
An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 occurred only 12 minutes ago 68 km southwest of David, Panama, the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near David, Provincia de Chiriqui, Panama, in the morning on Friday 29 January 2021 at 7:14 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from RSN which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7. Other agencies reporting the same quake include European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.9, and German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.5.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Baco (pop. 170) located 10 km from the epicenter.
In Puerto Armuelles (pop. 11,700) located 22 km from the epicenter, El Palmar (pop. 4,500) 24 km away, Progreso (pop. 2,200) 40 km away, San Pablo Viejo Abajo (pop. 6,000) 63 km away, and Pedregal (pop. 17,400) 64 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in David (pop. 82,000) located 68 km from the epicenter, Las Lomas (pop. 11,700) 72 km away, and Volcan (pop. 10,300) 82 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
