Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Mytilene, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Monday 1 February 2021 at 7:46 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Agios Fokas (pop. 16) located 13 km from the epicenter, Polichnitos (pop. 2,700) 20 km away, and Agiasos (pop. 2,300) 32 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mytilene (pop. 28,300) located 47 km from the epicenter, Vrontados (pop. 5,300) 58 km away, Aliağa (pop. 44,900) 80 km away, Urla (pop. 45,200) 91 km away, Menemen (pop. 53,500) 94 km away, and Bergama (pop. 57,200) 99 km away.
