Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.8 just reported 47 km southwest of Mytilene, Greece4.8 quake 1 Feb 3:10 pm (GMT +2)
A shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported early afternoon near Mytilene, Lesbos, North Aegean, Greece.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Monday 1 February 2021 at 3:10 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Agios Fokas (pop. 16) located 12 km from the epicenter, and Polichnitos (pop. 2,700) 18 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Agiasos (pop. 2,300) located 32 km from the epicenter, Mytilene (pop. 28,300) 47 km away, Vrontados (pop. 5,300) 61 km away, Aliağa (pop. 44,900) 82 km away, and Urla (pop. 45,200) 93 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Menemen (pop. 53,500) located 96 km from the epicenter, and Bergama (pop. 57,200) 100 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
