An earthquake of magnitude 4.5 occurred early morning on Friday 5 February 2021 at 6:29 am local time near Leon, Departamento de Leon, Nicaragua, as reported by the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 131 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.5.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Leon (pop. 144,500) located 22 km from the epicenter, La Paz Centro (pop. 23,500) 26 km away, Quezalguaque (pop. 2,000) 30 km away, Chinandega (pop. 126,400) 51 km away, Managua (pop. 973,100) 71 km away, Diriamba (pop. 35,000) 83 km away, Tipitapa (pop. 50,000) 86 km away, and Masaya (pop. 130,100) 91 km away.
