Just 12 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Yerevan, Armenia. The tremor was recorded early evening on Friday 5 February 2021 at 7:36 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Chambarak (pop. 6,200) located 14 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gavarr (pop. 21,700) located 37 km from the epicenter, Sevan (pop. 17,100) 46 km away, and Hrazdan (pop. 40,800) 61 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Abovyan (pop. 35,700) located 78 km from the epicenter, Vanadzor (pop. 101,100) 89 km away, Yerevan (pop. 1,093,500) 91 km away, and Ashtarak (pop. 18,800) 99 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
