the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 4.8 quake in Chile near Arica, Provincia de Arica, Arica y Parinacota, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Tuesday 9 February 2021 at 8:28 am local time at an intermediate depth of 87 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.8 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arica (pop. 186,000) located 50 km from the epicenter, and Tacna (pop. 280,100) 84 km away.
