An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 7 minutes ago 12 km southwest of Hastings, New Zealand, New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 34.8 km beneath the epicenter near Hastings, Hastings District, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, early morning on Thursday 25 February 2021 at 6:35 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hastings (pop. 61,700) located 12 km from the epicenter, Taradale (pop. 16,600) 22 km away, and Napier City (pop. 56,800) 28 km away.
