4.2 quake 26 Feb 6:30 pm (GMT -6)
An intermediate magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported early evening near Matias Romero, Matías Romero Avendaño, Oaxaca, Mexico.
According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Friday 26 February 2021 at 6:30 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 146 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.2 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Francisco Villa Dos (Poblado Tres) (pop. 39, 5 km away), Hermanos Cedillo (pop. 1,200, 8 km away), Poblado Cinco (pop. 1,300, 14 km away), Poblado 10 (pop. 3,300, 24 km away), Jesus Carranza (pop. 4,000, 40 km away), Matias Romero (pop. 18,900, 60 km away), Texistepec (pop. 9,700, 69 km away), and Las Choapas (pop. 42,700, 93 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
