An earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred only 22 minutes ago 45 km southwest of Ayutla de los Libres, Mexico, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 8 km beneath the epicenter near Ayutla de los Libres, Guerrero, Mexico, after midnight on Saturday 27 February 2021 at 12:37 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Boca del Rio (pop. 490) located 6 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Cruz Grande (pop. 11,800) located 19 km from the epicenter, Jalapa (pop. 1,700) 23 km away, Copala (pop. 6,600) 26 km away, Cuautepec (pop. 3,600) 30 km away, and San Marcos (pop. 13,300) 30 km away.
