A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Ometepec, Guerrero, Mexico, was reported only 29 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 31 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Sunday 28 February 2021 at 4:18 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Barra de Tecoanapa (pop. 1,200) located 25 km from the epicenter, and Marquelia (pop. 6,600) 30 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Copala (pop. 6,600) located 34 km from the epicenter, San Nicolas (pop. 3,300) 38 km away, Juchitan (pop. 3,300) 41 km away, Cuajinicuilapa (pop. 10,300) 51 km away, Cruz Grande (pop. 11,800) 53 km away, Azoyu (pop. 4,200) 54 km away, and Ometepec (pop. 24,100) 63 km away.
