An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred only 14 minutes ago 59 km northwest of Ternate, Indonesia, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 134 km beneath the epicenter near Ternate, Maluku Utara, Indonesia, in the morning on Wednesday 31 March 2021 at 10:16 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4 as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ternate (pop. 101,700) located 59 km from the epicenter, and Tobelo (pop. 10,000) 104 km away.
