The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Greece near Kissamos, Chania, Crete, only 8 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Saturday 3 April 2021 at 9:10 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.5. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Moni Chrysoskalitissas (pop. 66) located 81 km from the epicenter, Gialos (pop. 870) 87 km away, Paleochora (pop. 2,400) 91 km away, Platanos (pop. 980) 93 km away, and Kissamos (pop. 4,200) 99 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
