4.2 quake 11 Apr 1:54 am (GMT +3)
Just 9 minutes ago, a 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Argostoli, Kefallonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday 11 April 2021 at 1:54 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Samos (pop. 1,300) located 6 km from the epicenter, and Ithaki (pop. 1,800) 8 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Valsamata (pop. 1000) located 16 km from the epicenter, Poros (pop. 1,100) 16 km away, Argostoli (pop. 9,800) 22 km away, and Lixouri (pop. 3,800) 25 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Zakynthos (pop. 11,500) located 59 km from the epicenter, and Agrinio (pop. 46,900) 72 km away.
