4.4 quake 5.3 Km NE of Grindavík, Iceland, 20 Apr 11:05 pm (GMT +0)
The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) reported a magnitude 4.4 quake in Iceland near Reykjavik, Reykjavíkurborg, Capital Region, only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Tuesday 20 April 2021 at 11:05 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.7 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Grindavik (pop. 2,900) located 5 km from the epicenter, Vogar (pop. 1000) 12 km away, and Reykjanesbaer (pop. 2,000) 16 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Sangerdhi (pop. 1,500) located 24 km from the epicenter, Hafnarfjordur (pop. 26,800) 30 km away, Garðabaer (pop. 11,400) 33 km away, Kopavogur (pop. 31,700) 35 km away, Reykjavik (pop. 118,900) 37 km away, Mosfellsbaer (pop. 8,700) 46 km away, and Mosfellsbær (pop. 8,700) 46 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
