A magnitude 4.4 earthquake near Fayzabad, Faīẕābād, Badakhshan, Afghanistan, was reported 30 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 195.4 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Friday 23 April 2021 at 11:50 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Jurm (pop. 12,100, 35 km away), Ashkāsham (pop. 12,100, 55 km away), Ishqoshim (pop. 26,000, 63 km away), Fayzabad (pop. 44,400, 70 km away), and Farkhār (pop. 10,500, 96 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
