A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Cono Norte, Provincia de Arequipa, Arequipa, Peru, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 157 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Monday 26 April 2021 at 2:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Chivay (pop. 4,500, 19 km away), Hacienda Huancane (pop. 7,800, 61 km away), Yura (pop. 5,700, 63 km away), Cono Norte (pop. 47,300, 68 km away), Lluta (pop. 6,000, 68 km away), Selva Alegre (pop. 72,700, 72 km away), Arequipa (pop. 841,100, 75 km away), Ciudad Satelite (pop. 76,400, 78 km away), and Jacobo Hunter (pop. 46,100, 80 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
