A magnitude 4.9 earthquake near Santo Domingo, Santo Domingo De Guzmán, Nacional, Dominican Republic, was reported only 15 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity in the Dominican Republic. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate depth of 91 km beneath the epicenter in the morning on Sunday 16 May 2021 at 8:14 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the United States Geological Survey which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Juan Adrian (pop. 1,400) located 15 km from the epicenter, San Jose de Ocoa (pop. 21,100) 21 km away, Bonao (pop. 73,300) 24 km away, Villa Altagracia (pop. 40,000) 33 km away, Constanza (pop. 29,500) 34 km away, Jarabacoa (pop. 30,000) 46 km away, and Santo Domingo Oeste (pop. 701,300) 57 km away.
