An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred after midnight on Monday 17 May 2021 at 12:09 am local time near Fortuna, Humboldt County, California, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 9.5 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Ferndale (pop. 1,400, 20 miles away), Rio Dell (pop. 3,400, 21 miles away), Hydesville (pop. 1,200, 24 miles away), Fortuna (pop. 12,000, 25 miles away), Eureka (pop. 27,000, 37 miles away), Bayside (pop. 17,100, 42 miles away), Arcata (pop. 17,800, 43 miles away), and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200, 47 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
