4.9 quake 87 km northeast of Tacna, Peru, 22 May 2:42 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred early morning on Saturday 22 May 2021 at 2:42 am local time near Tacna, Provincia de Tacna, Peru, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Cairire (pop. 18) located 3 km from the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chuquitira (pop. 4,200) located 50 km from the epicenter, Chipispaya (pop. 1,900) 62 km away, Quilahuani (pop. 3,200) 70 km away, Tacna (pop. 280,100) 87 km away, and Ilabaya (pop. 9,500) 94 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
