A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Akita, Akita Shi, Japan, was reported only 11 minutes ago by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 174.5 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday 24 May 2021 at 1:27 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
