4.3 quake 30 May 8:01 pm (GMT -4)
4.3 quake 30 May 8:01 pm (GMT -4)
An intermediate magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported in the evening near Arica, Provincia de Arica, Region de Arica y Parinacota, Chile.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Sunday 30 May 2021 at 8:01 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 143 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arica (pop. 186,000) located 51 km from the epicenter. In Tarata (pop. 3,100, 89 km away), and Chipispaya (pop. 1,900, 92 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
