5.2 quake 15 Jun 3:30 pm (GMT -5)
The Institute of Geophysics of the National Polytechnic School in Quito (IGEPN) reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Ecuador near Portoviejo, Cantón Portoviejo, Provincia de Manabi, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Tuesday 15 June 2021 at 3:30 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 2 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Jipijapa (pop. 35,900) located 57 km from the epicenter, Montecristi (pop. 18,400) 70 km away, Manta Ecuador (pop. 183,200) 74 km away, Sucre (pop. 15,300) 77 km away, Salinas (pop. 43,900) 77 km away, La Libertad (pop. 75,900) 80 km away, Santa Elena (pop. 42,200) 81 km away, and Portoviejo (pop. 170,300) 86 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
