Just 25 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Ometepec, Guerrero, Mexico. The tremor was recorded around noon on Wednesday 16 June 2021 at 1:17 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 16 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in El Papayo (pop. 190) located 20 km from the epicenter, Copala (pop. 6,600) 23 km away, Marquelia (pop. 6,600) 28 km away, Cruz Grande (pop. 11,800) 39 km away, Cuautepec (pop. 3,600) 39 km away, Juchitan (pop. 3,300) 45 km away, and San Marcos (pop. 13,300) 61 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ayutla de los Libres (pop. 15,400) located 64 km from the epicenter, and Ometepec (pop. 24,100) 70 km away.
