Just 13 minutes ago, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Asahikawa, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the evening on Sunday 20 June 2021 at 8:08 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 141 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. A third agency, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kamikawa (pop. 5,300) located 37 km from the epicenter, Shimo-furano (pop. 25,900) 40 km away, Asahikawa (pop. 356,600) 47 km away, Otofuke (pop. 40,900) 65 km away, Obihiro (pop. 173,900) 73 km away, Takikawa (pop. 45,100) 74 km away, Kitami (pop. 113,100) 92 km away, Iwamizawa (pop. 85,100) 92 km away, and Sapporo (pop. 1,883,000) 129 km away.
