A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Las Choapas, Veracruz, Mexico, was reported only 25 minutes ago by Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in Mexico. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 191 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Sunday 20 June 2021 at 6:47 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Norberto Aguirre Palancares (pop. 44, 6 km away), Helio Garcia Alfaro (pop. 1,600, 12 km away), La Horqueta (Poblado Doce) (pop. 1,500, 15 km away), Poblado 10 (pop. 3,300, 26 km away), Poblado Cinco (pop. 1,300, 36 km away), Las Choapas (pop. 42,700, 65 km away), Cuichapa (pop. 7,700, 67 km away), and Jaltipan de Morelos (pop. 32,800, 87 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
