The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Chile near Arica, Provincia de Arica, Region de Arica y Parinacota, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit late at night on Friday 25 June 2021 at 10:35 pm local time at an intermediate depth of 131 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arica (pop. 186,000) located 89 km from the epicenter, and Tacna (pop. 280,100) 98 km away.
