An intermediate magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the morning near Kushiro, Kushiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan.
According to Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the quake hit on Wednesday 7 July 2021 at 10:51 am local time at an intermediate depth of 94.9 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.9.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Kushiro (pop. 183,600) located 18 km from the epicenter, Motomachi (pop. 23,000) 80 km away, Kitami (pop. 113,100) 82 km away, Otofuke (pop. 40,900) 87 km away, Obihiro (pop. 173,900) 88 km away, and Shibetsu (pop. 21,700) 94 km away. In Abashiri (pop. 42,500, 101 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
