3.6 quake Douglas County, Nevada, USA, 8 Jul 2021 4:11 pm (GMT -7)
A magnitude 3.6 earthquake near Carson City, Carson City County, Nevada, USA, was reported only 7 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.9 miles beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Thursday 8 July 2021 at 4:11 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Walker (pop. 720) located 5 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Topaz Ranch Estates (pop. 1,500) located 19 miles from the epicenter, Smith Valley (pop. 1,600) 25 miles away, Smith (pop. 1000) 26 miles away, Gardnerville Ranchos (pop. 11,300) 31 miles away, and Gardnerville (pop. 5,700) 34 miles away. In South Lake Tahoe (pop. 21,700, 40 miles away), and Carson City (pop. 54,500, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

Data for the same earthquake reported by different agencies

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
