4.7 quake 11 Jul 9:46 am (GMT -5)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.7 occurred in the morning on Sunday 11 July 2021 at 9:46 am local time near Arequipa, Provincia de Arequipa, Peru, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 118 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Llongasora (pop. 4,800) located 3 km from the epicenter, Jayune (pop. 4,300) 10 km away, Jatun Orcochiri (pop. 4,400) 11 km away, Cono Norte (pop. 47,300) 80 km away, Selva Alegre (pop. 72,700) 83 km away, Arequipa (pop. 841,100) 86 km away, Ciudad Satelite (pop. 76,400) 89 km away, Jacobo Hunter (pop. 46,100) 91 km away, and Espinar (pop. 23,900) 96 km away.
