Tonga was shaken near Hihifo, Niuas, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 33 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate depth of 80 km beneath the epicenter near Hihifo, Niuas, Tonga, in the morning on Monday 26 July 2021 at 7:48 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Hihifo (pop. 820) located 105 km from the epicenter.
