An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 14 minutes ago 63 km southeast of Choma, Zambia, South Africa's Council for Geoscience (CGS) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Choma, Choma District, Southern Province, Zambia, early morning on Monday 9 August 2021 at 3:39 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Sinasongwe (pop. 11,500) located 12 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Maamba (pop. 12,300) located 40 km from the epicenter, Binga (pop. 4,300) 53 km away, and Choma (pop. 46,700) 63 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Monze (pop. 30,300) located 97 km from the epicenter.
