An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred only 9 minutes ago 19 miles northwest of Alaska City, Alaska, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 28 miles beneath the epicenter near Alaska City, Anchorage, Alaska, USA, in the afternoon on Tuesday, September 7th, 2021, at 4:57 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Big Lake (pop. 3,400, 9 miles away), Houston (pop. 2,200, 18 miles away), Alaska City (pop. 298,700, 19 miles away), Knik-Fairview (pop. 14,900, 20 miles away), Willow (pop. 2,100, 21 miles away), Eagle River (pop. 24,800, 23 miles away), Eagle River (pop. 24,800, 23 miles away), Meadow Lakes (pop. 7,600, 23 miles away), and Elmendorf Air Force Base (pop. 6,600, 23 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
