Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 just reported 60 km northeast of Pauri, India

4.9 quake 11 Sep 5:58 am (GMT +5:30)
4.9 quake 11 Sep 5:58 am (GMT +5:30)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred early morning on Saturday, September 11th, 2021, at 5:28 am local time near Pauri, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, India, as reported by India's National Center for Seismology (NCS).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Pīpalkoti (pop. 2,000) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Joshīmath (pop. 13,900) 28 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Srinagar Garhwal (pop. 20,200) located 56 km from the epicenter, Pauri (pop. 26,500) 60 km away, Tehri (pop. 27,600) 80 km away, and Almora (pop. 32,400) 97 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
