5.1 quake 40 km northeast of Split, Croatia, Oct 6, 2021 9:57 pm (GMT +2)
Croatia was shaken near Split, Grad Split, Split-Dalmatia, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.1 only 12 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5 km beneath the epicenter near Split, Grad Split, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia, in the evening on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021, at 9:57 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Otok (pop. 3,200) located 12 km from the epicenter.
In Trilj (pop. 2,400) located 14 km from the epicenter, Sinj (pop. 11,500) 20 km away, Podstrana (pop. 9,100) 33 km away, Solin (pop. 20,200) 34 km away, Split (pop. 176,300) 40 km away, and Makarska (pop. 13,400) 43 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Mostar (pop. 104,500) located 83 km from the epicenter, and Sarajevo (pop. 696,700) 120 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
