5.1 quake 22 Oct 9:21 am (GMT +7)
Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency reported a magnitude 5.1 quake in Indonesia near Blitar, East Java, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Friday, October 22nd, 2021, at 9:21 am local time at an intermediate depth of 98 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Gongdanglegi Kulon (pop. 22,500) located 72 km from the epicenter, Dampit (pop. 23,100) 72 km away, Sumberpucung (pop. 35,300) 72 km away, Kepanjen (pop. 51,900) 76 km away, Pakisaji (pop. 30,200) 84 km away, Blitar (pop. 132,400) 87 km away, Malang (pop. 746,700) 94 km away, and Ngunut (pop. 26,300) 94 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you're in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
