A moderately shallow magnitude 4.8 earthquake was reported late at night near Concepcion, Provincia de Concepción, Region del Biobio, Chile.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake hit on Friday, October 22nd, 2021, at 10:45 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 40 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Chiguayante (pop. 82,500) located 20 km from the epicenter, Concepcion (pop. 215,400) 26 km away, Penco (pop. 46,100) 28 km away, Coronel (pop. 92,900) 32 km away, Lota (pop. 49,800) 36 km away, Cabrero (pop. 18,300) 37 km away, Talcahuano (pop. 253,000) 37 km away, and Tomé (pop. 46,700) 38 km away.
