4.8 quake 23 Oct 5:21 am (GMT -3)
An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred early morning on Saturday, October 23rd, 2021, at 5:21 am local time near San Antonio de los Cobres, Departamento de Los Andes, Salta, Argentina, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate to considerable depth of 158 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Antonio de los Cobres (pop. 4,000) located 82 km from the epicenter.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
