Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Eureka, Humboldt County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Tuesday, November 2nd, 2021, at 5:24 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 16 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Scotia (pop. 850) located 10 miles from the epicenter, Rio Dell (pop. 3,400) 11 miles away, Fortuna (pop. 12,000) 16 miles away, Humboldt Hill (pop. 3,400) 24 miles away, and Eureka (pop. 27,000) 30 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bayside (pop. 17,100) located 33 miles from the epicenter, Uniontown (pop. 17,800) 35 miles away, and McKinleyville (pop. 15,200) 40 miles away.
